Who is one of the most inspiring women you know? What did she do that inspired you? From the past to present, many different women have advocated, fought, and died, for the well being of others. Women such as Harriet Tubman have exuded courage and sacrificed to help others experience a life of freedom.
Harriet Tubman was born in Dorchester County, Maryland to parents Ben Ross and Harriet Greene Ross. Even as a young girl, Harriet helped and advocated for others, which caused much of her resistance to slavery, the treatments endured, and her physical troubles. According to Debra Michals, PhD (2015), Harriet was injured at the age of 12 as she tried to protect a runaway slave. Young Harriet was brutally hit in the head by one of her slave masters, which resulted in seizures and a disfigurement for the rest of her life. Harriet’s challenges encouraged and motivated her to escape the cruelty of slavery and help end the suffering of others.
Between the years 1850 and 1860, Harriet especially demonstrated bravery and courage. Harriet never gave up hope that many slaves would be free, and she did not show fear and worry to those she helped. Harriet used the Underground Railroad, which had been a convenient escape route for many slaves she helped to freedom, including herself. According to Biography.com (2021), Harriet freed 300 slaves including her parents and siblings using the Underground Railroad, which earned her the nickname of “Moses,” to signify her great leadership. Harriet helped more than 300 slaves to freedom and was never caught by slave owners, is a phenomenal act of leadership skills. It also demonstrates her determination to help others live the life they deserved.
Harriet Tubman’s bravery, encouragement, and motivation are forever inspiring. Harriet is one of the most influential women from past to present and is an example for women to fight and advocate for whatever is unjust and whatever we set our mind to. Be a Harriet Tubman for the future generations!
