The month of February brings great significance to the world. February is the month where African Americans from the past are honored and shown appreciation for the hard work they have done for the world, and of course it is so much more. In celebration of accomplishments and stories of Black historical figures, I had the opportunity to watch MAST’s Black History Month Show. The show was incredible in many ways, as it showed the importance of African Americans in society, and how they risked it all to be where we are today. It was amazing to see the gathering of many talented students show their work and perform as a team. From the dancing, poem reading, and the video montage of historical events that occurred during slavery, talent was present.
One of the biggest moments in the show were the brave performers, specifically speakers, that explained the harsh reality African Americans experienced and continue to experience. The speakers bravely put themselves on display and demonstrated their talents. I was touched by it because not many people have the confidence to come out of their shell and it shows they are expressing their true selves and feelings about the Black experience. They explained the brutality African Americans faced and they recited the difficult times Blacks endured; from being dragged by cars, to hiding to get to freedom. Their ability to express those terrible experiences is like living them now and being able to speak about the struggle is not easy. It can be difficult for some people to speak out about it.
A message I received from the Black History Month Show is to never be afraid to stand up for change and do not fear what is going to come. During the show as we remembered the past accomplishments and struggles African Americans endured, It demonstrated that during those difficult times not many people would have thought Blacks would be able to experience freedom and equal rights as they are now, to some degree. The Black History Month show brought us talented students and education about the challenges and changes made because of African Americans.
